Arena is a platform for evaluating how AI models perform in real-world scenarios. Founded by researchers from UC Berkeley's SkyLab, the company helps tens of millions of users evaluate frontier AI systems and provides transparent, human-centered evaluations used by leading AI labs, enterprises, and independent researchers.
You will own features end-to-end across Arena's platform—from understanding the problem, designing and building the solution, shipping it, measuring impact, and iterating. This is a hands-on individual contributor role for someone who writes code daily, cares deeply about post-launch performance, and is excited to shape how people interact with cutting-edge AI.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own features from technical scoping through deployment and post-launch iteration, ensuring they work in production
- Design and extend schemas, APIs, and business logic to support new product capabilities
- Ship high-quality product code across the full stack
- Incorporate real user feedback from data, direct user contact, and product instincts to improve shipped features
- Work closely with ML researchers to turn research services into production-ready features
- Collaborate across design, product, and engineering to determine what to build and how
- Identify and advocate for improvements to development, testing, and deployment practices
The team consists of researchers, academics, builders, and creatives from UC Berkeley, Google, Stanford, and DeepMind. The culture values seeking truth, moving fast, and prioritizing craftsmanship, curiosity, and impact over hierarchy.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of software engineering experience, with focus on enterprise or developer-facing product development
- Experience building user-facing web applications spanning frontend, backend/API, and database in any stack; understanding of the request lifecycle across layers
- Clear, concise communication; ability to explain technical decisions, distinguish your work from the team's, and proactively share context
- Evidence of shipping and iterating on features: ability to describe the full arc from problem through solution, code, post-launch results, and retrospective improvements
- Product engineering identity: genuine care about whether built solutions work for users, not just code quality
- Genuine curiosity about AI evaluation and Arena's mission; familiarity with the product and ability to articulate why this domain matters
BONUS:
- Familiarity with NextJS, React, TypeScript, Tailwind, ShadCN, HonoJS, Postgres, Vitest
- Experience with Supabase or Vercel's AI SDK
- Track record shipping features without PM or design support by talking to users or analyzing data
