Front is a customer operations platform serving 9,000+ companies including Uber Freight, Navan, and Stripe. The Foundations team is the backbone of Front's engineering organization, owning the frameworks, libraries, and internal systems that enable all other engineering teams to move fast and build with confidence.
In this role, you'll work at the intersection of platform engineering and developer experience. Rather than building end-user features, you'll build the systems that make those features possible. Your primary stakeholders are other engineers across the company.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining shared backend frameworks, libraries, and internal tooling used across engineering teams
- Designing and implementing systems emphasizing reliability, observability, and performance (task queue, batch job framework, database ORM, real-time event infrastructure)
- Owning and evolving CI/CD systems to ensure fast, reliable, and safe delivery pipelines
- Collaborating with engineering teams to understand pain points, establish shared patterns, and drive framework adoption
- Influencing Front's backend architecture and engineering-wide standards
- Navigating ambiguity to define and solve complex problems
Required qualifications:
- Backend JavaScript/TypeScript expertise (not frontend-focused)
- Experience building frameworks, libraries, or developer-facing internal tools
- Track record building distributed systems with emphasis on reliability, observability, and performance
- Strong software design fundamentals and delivery of high-complexity projects
- Clear communication and ability to explain technical tradeoffs to engineering stakeholders
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to drive clarity without a fully-defined roadmap
- Ability to thrive in dynamic, collaborative, low-ego, high-growth environments
Bonus: TypeScript performance optimization expertise, prior platform/enablement team experience at product-led companies.
