You'll join the Forward Deployed Software Engineering team, working on high-impact product initiatives directly tied to Zip's most critical customer deals. This role combines core product engineering with embedded customer partnership—you'll write and ship production code while working alongside Field PMs and Solutions Consultants to deliver features that close major deals and keep enterprise customers on the leading edge.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading engineering on critical customer projects, owning scope, sequencing, and delivery against high-stakes deal timelines
- Shipping net-new product capabilities, framework enhancements (APIs, exports, notifications), and targeted features that ship in days or weeks
- Bringing strong product judgment to every decision, partnering with core product teams on what to build and what to push back on
- Shaping Zip's long-term platform roadmap—features you ship at critical customers first compound into platform-wide investments
- Communicating directly with procurement, finance, and IT leaders at enterprise customers, diagnosing problems live, and translating technical trade-offs for both engineers and executives
The work is fast-paced, customer-driven, and directly impacts whether major deals close on time and whether customers stay competitive.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: shipped non-trivial production systems, can read and write code across the stack (Python backend, React/TypeScript frontend)
- Product instincts and judgment: you push back on poorly scoped requirements, notice when features solve the wrong problem, and communicate that clearly
- Customer empathy and crisp communication: can translate between procurement directors' business concerns and technical specifications; if you haven't done this before but find it energizing, that's valuable
- Speed and urgency balanced with high quality: can move on customer-driven timelines while writing production-grade code
- High ownership: diagnose, build, and ship with minimal supervision; follow problems upstream until actually fixed
Helpful but not required:
- Prior product engineer or full-stack engineer experience on teams that owned features end-to-end, shipped frequently, and worked closely with users/customers
- Founder or early-employee experience
- Background in procurement, finance, ERP, or AP automation systems
