Eon is building a high-throughput point-to-point data transport network in Medium Earth Orbit using free-space laser links to move petabytes of data between any two points on Earth. The company recently closed a $10.75M seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst, and is operating out of its R&D center in Culver City.
As a Software Engineer for Flight and Embedded Systems, you will own the flight and embedded software stack for Eon's optical payload and ground terminal. This spans board-level firmware, the payload application layer, and real-time code that closes control loops. You'll work closely with the Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) and Lasercom PAT teams, whose control designs you'll implement in real-time code, and collaborate with electrical engineers bringing up new hardware.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop embedded firmware in C/C++ for terminal and payload electronics, including drivers, board support packages, and deterministic real-time execution on microcontrollers and SoCs
- Build the payload application layer: commanding, telemetry, fault detection and management, and software interfaces to the bus
- Implement control loops in real-time code based on GNC and Lasercom designs
- Support hardware bring-up with EE teams, writing low-level drivers (I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet)
- Instrument systems for observability through logging, telemetry, and diagnostics
- Establish the embedded toolchain: build systems, version control, CI, and hardware-in-the-loop testing
- Define the path from demonstrator software to flight-qualified rigor, including fault handling and update mechanisms
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related field; embedded development depth in C/C++ across bare-metal and RTOS environments; hands-on hardware bring-up experience with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG; low-level peripheral and driver experience; Python for tooling and test automation; and comfort operating with incomplete data in a fast-moving environment.
Preferred experience includes flight software frameworks (cFS, F Prime, CCSDS), real-time control loop implementation, FPGA SoC platforms (Zynq), fault management and FDIR design, hardware-in-the-loop test infrastructure, telemetry pipelines, and radiation/safety-critical software practices.
This is a seed-stage role with no program office or requirements team. Your code runs first on every new board and is the last line of defense against anomalies. This is hands-on work at the bench next to hardware. The company hires at all levels from Associate through Senior and Principal, calibrating title, scope, and compensation to experience.
