Zoox is developing the first ground-up, fully autonomous vehicle fleet and supporting ecosystem. The Robot Software Infrastructure team is seeking a software engineer to develop and advance the embedded Linux operating system that powers multiple devices on autonomous vehicles, including autonomy systems.
You will design, develop, and maintain the OS platform for on-bot devices and applications. Key responsibilities include configuring and managing embedded Linux build systems (Yocto) and bootloader processes (U-Boot) to ensure reliable system startup; developing and optimizing device drivers and kernel-space components using C, C++, or Rust to meet performance and reliability requirements; and collaborating cross-functionally with developers, release management, hardware engineering, manufacturing, and operations to support vehicle development and deployment at scale. You'll triage issues, support new hardware bring-up, and enable manufacturing functions.
This role offers the opportunity to influence the next generation of the platform, hardware, and robotaxi fleet. You will work on a broad problem space while maintaining awareness of how components fit within a larger autonomous vehicle system.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4+ years delivering embedded software for production systems
- Deep understanding of Linux, build systems (Yocto), and bootloaders (U-Boot)
- Familiarity with Linux init systems (systemd), containerization concepts (chroot, cgroups, Linux namespaces), and filesystems
- Understanding of device drivers and kernel-space code
- Proficiency in a language without automatic memory management (C or C++)
- Proficiency in multiple scripting languages (bash, Python)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with embedded Linux in robotics applications
- Familiarity with security software (PKI, secure boot, OTA updates, hardware key storage)
- Familiarity with Nvidia GPUs, Nvidia Thor/Orin, CUDA, TensorRT
