Salary: USD 180,000 - 220,000 / annual
Discord is seeking a Software Engineer for the Realtime Infrastructure team, responsible for building and maintaining some of Discord's highest-scale and most critical services. These systems form the core of Discord's text chat infrastructure and handle the dispatching of every update to user sessions, directly impacting Discord's reliability, performance, and ability to scale.
In this role, you will build and operate large-scale, reliable, and performant distributed systems that serve millions of daily active users. You'll collaborate closely with product teams to create new features on top of the infrastructure, ensure Discord's platform stability and performance, and work on both code development and infrastructure management. You'll be part of a small but critical team whose work has direct impact on Discord's success, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Realtime Infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include designing and building backend systems, solving complex distributed system problems, operating and maintaining critical tier-0 services, implementing monitoring and alerting best practices, and contributing to open-source software when relevant.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of experience writing and designing backend systems
- Experience solving complex distributed system problems
- Experience operating and maintaining critical tier-0 services
- Knowledge of monitoring and alerting best practices
- Familiarity with open-source software and willingness to dig into library source code
Bonus qualifications:
- Experience with Elixir or Rust
- Experience with cloud environments (GCP, AWS, etc.)
- Knowledge of DevOps tools (Salt, Terraform, Kubernetes)
- Open-source project contributions
- Experience building bots or apps on Discord's platform
Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available.
