Revolut is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in self-managed storage solutions to join its Technology team in Bucharest (or hybrid/remote from eligible EU locations). This role focuses on designing, building, and operating critical infrastructure at global scale, with a primary emphasis on Apache Kafka clusters and distributed storage systems.
You will be responsible for designing and evolving storage solutions across cloud and on-premise environments, building and maintaining highly available distributed systems (messaging, storage, data infrastructure), and architecting multi-region deployments with robust failover and disaster recovery strategies. A key part of the role involves developing infrastructure-as-code and internal self-service platforms that enable engineering teams to provision and operate safely at scale.
You'll drive automation across provisioning, scaling, upgrades, patching, and incident remediation, and contribute to reliability standards (SLOs, SLIs, error budgets) while improving observability across the stack. Close collaboration with backend, platform, security, and compliance teams is essential to design infrastructure meeting regulatory and audit requirements for a fintech environment.
Required qualifications include production expertise operating Apache Kafka at scale (cluster provisioning, lifecycle management, capacity planning, performance tuning, replication, failover, resilience design), security hardening knowledge (ACLs, encryption, authentication), and a background in SRE, platform engineering, or infrastructure engineering. You must have deep understanding of distributed systems concepts (consensus, partitioning, fault tolerance, backpressure, networking), hands-on experience with Linux, containerization (Docker), and Kubernetes, and expertise with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and configuration management (Ansible).
Nice-to-have skills include experience operating other stateful systems at scale (Postgres, Redis, object storage), knowledge of monitoring and observability tooling (Prometheus, Stackdriver, Vector, VictoriaMetrics), exposure to regulated environments or financial systems, and experience operating infrastructure across cloud (GCP/AWS) and on-premise environments.
