Sakana AI is seeking a Software Engineer to contribute to Japan's defense and intelligence sectors through AI-powered application design and development. This role requires designing and developing full-stack systems that integrate multimodal AI models, managing service operations, and occasionally working on-site at client environments.
You will own end-to-end system architecture and implementation across multiple technical domains. The role demands strong autonomous problem-solving ability in ambiguous situations—from defining customer needs and extracting requirements to decomposing and solving complex technical challenges. You must leverage agentic AI tools throughout your work to maximize quality and speed of deliverables.
Required experience includes hands-on design, development, and operations in at least two of: Frontend (TypeScript, Next.js/SvelteKit/Nuxt), Backend (Python, Node.js, Go), Infrastructure (AWS/GCP or on-premises private environments), Mobile (Android), Embedded systems (drones), or DDIL environments (mesh networks in restricted communication settings). You must also have practical experience designing and operating ML systems incorporating multimodal models.
Welcome experience includes broader technical domains, AI-driven product development at tech companies, data-driven decision-making environments, UI/UX design knowledge, RAG and search system design (hybrid search, reranking, data provenance), entity resolution across data sources, knowledge graph construction, and time-series event data modeling.
This position requires Japanese business-level communication and document comprehension; interviews are conducted in Japanese. Japanese citizenship is required due to strict information security and security clearance requirements inherent to defense and intelligence projects. A bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent professional experience is required. Business-level English is a plus.
