MotherDuck is building a cloud-hosted analytics platform around DuckDB, the fastest-growing query engine in modern data infrastructure. The Database team owns the core server and client extension logic that enables DuckDB to run seamlessly across local development and cloud environments, bridging the gap between software and data engineering workflows.
In this role, you'll own major projects in the dual execution stack, ensuring DuckDB processes queries efficiently whether running locally or in the cloud. You'll help build resource assignment systems that dynamically allocate cloud infrastructure, keeping the platform efficient across workloads from tiny to massive. You'll lead cross-functional collaboration with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to maintain coherent end-to-end user experience.
Key responsibilities include pushing the state of the art in embedded database performance and distributed execution, deepening DuckDB expertise and mentoring teammates, working directly with the support team to debug issues and learn from real usage patterns, and improving systems holistically by spotting architectural challenges early. You'll work closely with DuckDB Labs (the creators of DuckDB, grown from CWI's Database Architectures group) to align on APIs and shape the future of the platform.
You should have shipped complex backend systems and be fluent in systems languages like C++, Rust, or Java. A strong foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization is essential. Hands-on DuckDB experience is a huge plus. You'll have worked with cloud infrastructure, networking, and low-latency distributed systems, and be comfortable scoping and leading projects across multiple collaborators and dependencies. You take pride in clear thinking, careful design, and thoughtful tradeoffs, and enjoy mentoring peers and engaging with the open-source community.
