MotherDuck is building a cloud-hosted analytics platform around DuckDB, the fastest-growing query engine for analytical workloads. The Database team bridges DuckDB and the cloud, owning core server and client extension logic that enables seamless local and cloud execution. You'll work in C++ alongside the DuckDB codebase, collaborating closely with DuckDB Labs (the creators of DuckDB at CWI).
In this role, you'll own major projects in dual execution stacks, enabling DuckDB queries to run seamlessly whether locally or in the cloud. You'll help build dynamic resource assignment systems that keep the platform efficient across tiny to massive workloads. You'll lead cross-functional work with frontend, platform, and infrastructure teams to maintain coherent end-to-end user experience.
You'll push the state of the art in embedded database performance, distributed execution, and DuckDB internals. Day-to-day responsibilities include driving architectural improvements, debugging production issues with the support team, learning from real usage patterns, and mentoring teammates. You'll deepen your DuckDB expertise and share it through documentation and knowledge transfer.
The ideal candidate has shipped complex backend systems and is fluent in C++, Rust, Java, or similar systems languages. You have a strong foundation in query engines, execution plans, indexing, and performance optimization. Hands-on DuckDB experience is a huge plus. You've worked with cloud infrastructure, networking, and low-latency distributed systems. You can scope and lead multi-team projects, take pride in clear thinking and careful design, and enjoy engaging with the open-source community.
The role is based in Amsterdam with a hybrid structure: three days per week in the office (located on the river Ij with daily lunch provided), and flexible remote work the rest of the time.
