TRM Labs is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Data Platform Serving team, working on distributed data infrastructure that powers government cloud investigations. This role focuses on operating and scaling a StarRocks-backed serving layer that sits at the core of TRM's government cloud environment—a regulated, high-availability deployment serving public sector investigators. You will own performance tuning on the StarRocks serving layer, using AI-assisted query profiling to identify and fix slow query patterns before they impact customers. You'll build and harden data pipelines feeding government cloud investigations, leveraging AI code review workflows to ship reliable changes in a high-compliance environment where mistakes carry significant consequences. A key responsibility is reducing single-point-of-failure risk by becoming the second engineer capable of independently operating and troubleshooting the serving layer, cutting incident response time during outages. You'll use AI-assisted debugging and log analysis to triage production issues in a regulated environment, turning multi-hour investigations into rapid root-cause fixes. The role requires hands-on experience operating distributed OLAP or serving-layer systems (StarRocks, Trino, ClickHouse, or similar), including query tuning and performance optimization at scale. You should have a track record of owning data pipeline reliability and incident response, and comfort using AI tools (Claude, Cursor, or similar) to accelerate debugging, code review, and documentation. The Data Platform Serving team is distributed but communicates constantly via Slack and async documentation, with a bias toward direct, evidence-based technical discussion. Decisions are made close to the data—engineers who operate systems make architectural calls with input from the broader Data Platform organization. You'll work closely with Forward Deployed Engineering and Product teams to maintain parity between government cloud and commercial platforms. TRM operates at high velocity with clear ownership and impact expectations. The team moves quickly, ships in days what takes months elsewhere, and operates in a complex environment at the intersection of AI, national security, and crime prevention. This role requires independent ownership, comfort with ambiguity, adaptability, and the ability to maintain focus in a fast-moving, intense environment. U.S. citizenship is required due to government cloud data access requirements.
