Superhuman (formerly Grammarly) is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build the data governance layer for its AI productivity platform serving 40+ million users. The role sits at the intersection of software engineering and data, where you'll architect systems that enforce privacy, security, compliance, and metadata management across a platform ingesting 70+ billion events daily. You'll own the design and technical strategy for data governance across the full product suite—including Grammarly's writing assistance, Docs' collaborative workspace, Mail's inbox management, and Go (the proactive AI assistant). The governance systems you build will span the entire data lifecycle from ingestion through analytics and machine learning, serving both consumer and enterprise customers with sensitive data environments. Key responsibilities include: architecting large-scale systems for privacy policy enforcement, metadata and lineage management; designing solutions that keep data secure and purpose-driven while protecting confidentiality and integrity in transit and at rest; championing metadata management systems for discoverability and accurate lineage tracking; making high-level architectural decisions on system design and technology choices; collaborating with Privacy & Legal, Security, and Trust Engineering teams; and mentoring engineers across back-end infrastructure and data engineering. You'll work in a hybrid model with preferred locations in Seattle or San Francisco, balancing focus time with in-person collaboration. The role requires deep expertise in distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and production reliability, combined with hands-on experience in Spark, modern lakehouses (Databricks, Delta Lake, dbt, Snowflake), and data governance frameworks (GDPR, CCPA). You'll be a strategic thinker who can balance building in-house solutions against third-party tools, and an excellent communicator who translates business needs into robust technical solutions.
