Kong is a leading developer of cloud API technologies on a mission to enable companies to become API-first and securely accelerate AI adoption. The Identity and Access Management (IAM) Team is responsible for building and maintaining the authentication and authorization systems that secure Kong Konnect and the Developer Portal, protecting millions of API requests daily.
As a Software Engineer on the IAM Team, you will be a key contributor to building scalable backend services for Kong's multi-tenant platform. You'll develop microservices in Golang that handle identity management, access control, and permissions enforcement, working with modern cloud-native technologies including AWS and Kubernetes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain backend microservices in Golang powering authentication and authorization for Kong Konnect and Developer Portal
- Build scalable APIs integrating identity and access management capabilities across Kong's product ecosystem
- Deploy and manage services on AWS using Kubernetes for container orchestration and high availability
- Implement secure, performant backend services handling high-volume traffic and enforcing access control policies
- Collaborate with senior engineers and security teams to learn and implement IAM best practices
- Work with product managers and engineering teams to deliver features enhancing developer and enterprise experiences
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code with comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests
- Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and architecture planning
- Monitor and optimize service performance, reliability, and security through observability tools
- Participate in on-call rotation ensuring high availability of platform services
- Contribute to engineering excellence and security-first development culture
Required qualifications:
- 3+ years professional software engineering experience building backend services and distributed systems
- Strong Golang proficiency with production microservices experience
- API development and design expertise (REST, gRPC)
- Microservices architecture experience in production environments
- Hands-on AWS experience (EKS, ECS, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, S3)
- Kubernetes deployment, scaling, and container management experience
- Understanding of distributed systems concepts and building highly available, fault-tolerant services
- Security best practices knowledge for backend services
- Multi-tenancy and multi-customer service experience
- CI/CD pipeline experience (GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
- Database systems experience (SQL and NoSQL)
- Strong computer science fundamentals
- GitHub and collaboration tools proficiency
- Distributed team experience
- Problem-solving and complex systems debugging skills
- Eagerness to learn IAM technologies
Bonus experience includes OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, SAML, RBAC, API Gateway technologies, identity federation, SSO, identity providers (Auth0, Okta, Keycloak), message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ), zero-trust security, Redis/Memcached, observability tools, Infrastructure as Code, service mesh technologies, compliance frameworks, open-source contributions, and additional programming languages.
