Notion is hiring a Software Engineer for Collections Infrastructure to help scale the backend systems powering Notion's database block. The role sits at the intersection of infrastructure and product, focusing on building backend architecture that improves customer experience while serving as a platform for other Notion teams.
You'll work on critical infrastructure challenges including database load performance, microservices architecture, high-volume writes from AI agents, and the flexibility that makes Notion databases powerful yet difficult to scale. The team supports Notion's growth into larger enterprise deployments and AI-native workflows, requiring systems that are faster, more reliable, and capable of handling much higher concurrency.
In your first 90 days, you'll understand how Collections Infrastructure supports Notion's database block, ship improvements to database performance or reliability, and build context on scale challenges in enterprise workspaces and AI-driven write volumes. You'll use AI as a real engineering collaborator—learning unfamiliar systems faster, exploring debugging paths, generating tests, and pressure-testing implementation plans before shipping.
By your first year, you'll have contributed to raising the quality bar for Collections infrastructure through better architecture, observability, documentation, or system boundaries that make future work easier to build on. You'll partner with senior engineers and product-facing teams to evolve Collections as a platform, balancing internal developer needs with external customer experience.
Required skills include strong backend engineering fundamentals with interest in performance, reliability, and scalability; curiosity about distributed systems and microservices; practical comfort with JavaScript or TypeScript; grit in technical problem-solving; and a self-guided learning style using docs, code, teammates, and AI to build context.
The role is based in San Francisco or New York City with hybrid work (in-office Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays). Notion provides competitive cash compensation and equity.
