Pliant is a Berlin-based European fintech specializing in B2B payment solutions. The company provides a modular, API-first platform that helps businesses streamline spending, improve cash flow, and integrate payments into their financial workflows. Founded in 2020, Pliant is a licensed e-money institution (EMI) that issues Visa-powered credit cards in 11 currencies across 30+ countries, serving over 4,000 businesses and 20+ partners globally.
You will join the Funds Transfers team, which owns the core financial logic driving every money movement across Pliant's platform. This includes settlements, drawdowns, customer top-ups, pay-ins, and billing before they touch external payment rails. The team orchestrates issuer settlements, refinancing mechanisms, and complex liquidity flows across multiple markets, entities, and regulatory models.
Key responsibilities include: collaborating on technical initiatives and epics from conception to production-ready code; actively shaping technical direction and system architecture; ensuring scalable, maintainable, and secure microservice architecture; participating in on-call rotation and system support; maintaining a knowledge-sharing culture through documentation (RFCs, ADRs) and grooming meetings; and working closely with product managers, engineering managers, and frontend engineers to deliver high-quality features.
The tech stack is Java, Spring Boot, AWS, PostgreSQL, and Kafka. The team includes backend and frontend engineers, a product manager, and an engineering manager.
Required qualifications: 5+ years of relevant experience with Java and Spring Boot (or equivalent); expertise in building testable, maintainable, and extendable systems; strong problem-solving skills; proficiency with REST APIs and event-driven communication patterns; proficiency with relational databases (preferably PostgreSQL); and experience with AWS and Docker.
Bonus qualifications include Infrastructure as Code (IaC), deep architectural experience, and mentoring experience.
