Clay is a $5B-valued, Series C-funded SaaS platform that helps organizations execute growth through data enrichment, workflow automation, and AI research. The company has crossed $100M in revenue and serves thousands of customers including Anthropic, Notion, Google, and Ramp. You'll own a product surface end-to-end as a backend product engineer, combining engineering and product management responsibilities. This role is ideal for engineers who want to influence what gets built, not just how it's built. Key responsibilities include: - Owning a product surface from problem definition through shipped, measured outcomes - Partnering with design, data science, and go-to-market teams to scope work and write specifications - Talking directly with customers—sitting in on calls, reading support tickets, and observing real usage patterns - Shipping quickly in short cycles with minimal process, prioritizing learning from production - Designing data models, APIs, and background jobs that power new product capabilities - Maintaining and improving system performance and reliability as usage scales - Improving the codebase and raising development velocity across the team - Mentoring other engineers and learning from teammates with different strengths You'll need 4+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience building products people use. Strong fundamentals in API and schema design, SQL (preferably Postgres), query optimization, and scaling are essential. You should have a bias toward impact and shipping, be results-oriented, and prefer learning from production over documentation. You're an empathetic communicator who expresses nuanced ideas clearly and prioritizes curiosity in disagreements. You care about craft—writing bug-free, understandable code and raising the engineering bar. Experience with large-scale systems and data is a plus. Clay's culture emphasizes creativity, unconventional thinking, and unique perspectives. The company offers free coaching in creativity and management, operates on principles like "negative maintenance" and "non-attached action," and has built a community of 11,000+ customers, 150+ integration partners, and 30k Slack members.
