Salary: USD 198,750 - 295,000 / annual

Hex Technologies is seeking a Senior or Staff-level Backend Platform Engineer to join their core compute platform team. This team is responsible for building and maintaining Hex's fundamental compute engine that powers code execution, SQL querying, and data processing across the entire Hex application—from the collaborative notebook interface to published applications and AI agents. The role sits at the intersection of systems architecture, API design, and performance optimization. You'll work on high-complexity projects spanning the full stack, including backend data systems and frontend integration. Example projects include: leveraging DuckDB for seamless Python/SQL interoperability, building intelligent caching systems for query acceleration, implementing graph-based dependency frameworks for multi-step execution optimization, instrumenting multi-language systems to identify performance bottlenecks, and creating visualizations to help users understand code performance characteristics. You'll need 6+ years of experience with complex, data-driven systems, expert-level proficiency in Python, SQL, Jupyter kernels, and/or data warehousing systems, and deep knowledge of industry trends in data processing and performant architectures. The ideal candidate loves diving into complex codebases, designing elegant abstractions, and has an obsessive focus on performance optimization. Strategic thinking, business alignment, and strong remote-first communication skills are essential. The tech stack includes TypeScript/React frontend with Apollo GraphQL and Redux, TypeScript Express/Apollo GraphQL backend, Postgres, Redis, Kubernetes, and AWS infrastructure with Terraform and Helm. The role is fully remote within the US Eastern timezone with optional access to the NYC office.
