Front is a customer operations platform used by 9,000+ companies including Uber Freight, Navan, and Stripe. The Foundations team owns the backend frameworks, libraries, and internal systems that enable the rest of engineering to move fast and build with confidence.
As a Software Engineer on the Foundations team, you'll work at the intersection of platform engineering and developer experience. Rather than building user-facing features, you'll build the systems that make those features possible. Your work includes designing and maintaining shared backend frameworks and libraries, implementing distributed systems with emphasis on reliability and observability, owning CI/CD infrastructure, and collaborating with engineering teams to establish shared patterns and drive adoption.
Key responsibilities include building and maintaining shared backend frameworks and internal tooling used across engineering teams, designing systems including task queues, batch job frameworks, database ORMs, and real-time event infrastructure, evolving CI/CD systems for fast and reliable delivery, understanding pain points across teams and establishing architectural patterns, and influencing Front's backend architecture and engineering-wide standards.
You should have strong backend JavaScript/TypeScript experience, a track record building frameworks or developer-facing internal tools, expertise in distributed systems design, exceptional software design fundamentals, and the ability to deliver high-complexity projects. Clear communication is essential since your stakeholders are other engineers. You should be comfortable navigating ambiguity and thrive in dynamic, collaborative, low-ego environments.
Bonus experience includes deep TypeScript performance optimization and prior work on platform or enablement teams at product-led companies. Your work will have compounding impact—improvements ripple across every team shipping customer-facing features.
Front operates on a hybrid model with office collaboration on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The company is backed by Sequoia Capital and Salesforce Ventures, has raised $204M, and has received numerous workplace accolades including Built In's 100 Best Midsize Places to Work in SF 2025.
