Alkira is reinventing networking for the AI era, building a cloud-native platform (CSX) that simplifies how enterprises connect, secure, and operate infrastructure across clouds, data centers, and AI workloads. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will own products end-to-end: from design and architecture through shipping and production operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Taking product ideas from concept to production, owning the full lifecycle from scoping through maintenance
- Building and maintaining large-scale distributed systems for multi-cloud networking, ensuring resiliency, scale, and correctness under real customer load
- Designing, building, and maintaining APIs and microservices using Java/Spring, Go, PostgreSQL, and Kubernetes
- Operating what you build: handling customer escalations, on-call support, telemetry analysis, and bug fixes as part of your ownership model
- Leveraging AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as core to your development workflow to ship 5–10x faster
- Picking up and maintaining existing services in your area
Required qualifications:
- B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field, plus 2+ years of software engineering experience
- Proven track record shipping products from zero to one, with comfort inheriting and improving existing codebases
- Strong CS fundamentals: Java/Spring, Go, distributed systems, REST API design, database schema design, multithreading
- Linux/kernel fluency and hands-on experience with containers and Kubernetes
- Security-first mindset for distributed, multi-tenant systems
- Product and customer empathy—understanding why features matter, not just how to build them
- Ability to work across geographically distributed teams on multiple concurrent projects
Networking background (BGP, SD-WAN, overlays, cloud networking) is a strong plus. Alkira, a Lumen company, was founded by the creators of Viptela and SD-WAN pioneers. The role offers the opportunity to shape the next chapter of enterprise networking at scale.
