Camunda is an enterprise platform for agentic orchestration that enables organizations to coordinate AI agents, people, and systems across complex business processes. The company is trusted by over 700 organizations worldwide, including 9 of the top 10 US banks, and is transforming into an AI-first organization built on its own platform.
As a Backend Software Engineer on the Data Layer team, you will help build and evolve the storage and query layer that powers Camunda 8's process data at scale. The data layer spans both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, supporting everything from process monitoring to new agent-driven automation capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer that stores and serves process data with focus on correctness, performance, and scale
- Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, working with Product Management to break down requirements into concrete solution designs
- Evolve how the company processes, retains, and exposes process data to meet customer needs
- Invest in making secondary storage systems more performant and scalable, and build tooling for production troubleshooting
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating data layer production issues
You bring at least 4 years of backend engineering experience with strong focus on production data stores. You have hands-on experience with at least one relational database or Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, with practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade-offs. You're comfortable investigating slow queries, execution plans, and index usage to root-cause production issues. Strong communication and collaboration skills in remote-first environments are essential.
Nice-to-haves include experience with workflow automation or process orchestration software, working with both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, building or maintaining CI pipelines, and understanding database migration tooling and schema evolution.
