Tessera Labs is building multi-agent AI systems that automate complex business workflows for enterprise customers. The company is backed by Foundation Capital and led by a world-class founding team focused on bringing AI-powered automation to the enterprise market.
As a Backend Engineer, you'll design, build, and maintain the backend systems powering Tessera's AI automation platform. This is a hands-on role in a fast-paced startup environment with high ownership and direct impact on product architecture.
Core responsibilities include designing and developing RESTful APIs and backend services using Python (FastAPI, SQLAlchemy), building reliable microservices for data processing and automation, and implementing optimized database schemas and caching strategies. You'll connect backend services with AI model servers, vector databases, and automation workflows, enabling smooth data exchange between AI agents and enterprise systems like Salesforce, SAP, and Workday.
You'll identify and fix performance bottlenecks, implement caching and monitoring for reliability, and collaborate with DevOps on cloud deployments (AWS/GCP). Security is critical—you'll implement OAuth2, RBAC, and SSO authentication. You'll work closely with frontend, AI, and product teams, taking initiative to identify improvements and balance speed with long-term scalability.
Required: 3–5 years backend development experience with APIs, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure. Proficiency in Python with FastAPI/SQLAlchemy, PostgreSQL/MySQL expertise, familiarity with Redis and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub), and cloud storage (AWS S3, GCS, Azure Blob). Strong debugging, testing, and performance optimization skills required.
Bonus: AI/ML model integration experience, event-driven architectures, or startup background.
