NetBird is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to build and scale the backend of its open-source, peer-to-peer networking platform. You will work on high-throughput distributed systems that power secure connectivity for users and organizations globally.
In this role, you will design, build, and scale high-throughput backend services and APIs in Go that power NetBird's globally distributed networking platform. You'll own data modeling and database performance optimization—designing schemas, optimizing queries, and ensuring systems scale under load. You'll implement observability best practices (metrics, logs, tracing) and contribute to incident response and postmortems.
You will take end-to-end ownership of features from design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and iteration. You'll collaborate closely with networking and platform engineers on routing, connectivity, and overall system performance. You'll also engage with the open-source community, debugging user-reported issues, participating in GitHub discussions, and maintaining high quality standards.
Required qualifications include 5+ years of professional experience building backend systems in Go or similar systems languages, proven experience building and operating high-scale distributed systems (high-throughput APIs, real-time platforms, infrastructure tools), and strong expertise in data modeling and database performance optimization. You should have a solid understanding of networking concepts (IP, routing, OAuth2/OIDC), an end-to-end ownership mindset, and thrive in high-autonomy, fast-paced environments.
Nice-to-have skills include experience with WireGuard, VPNs, or peer-to-peer networking technologies (STUN, TURN, ICE, NAT traversal), background in security-focused systems or networking products, experience with gRPC and REST-based APIs, familiarity with cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes, and open-source contributions in Go or networking/infrastructure projects.
