Luminary is an AI-native platform serving high-net-worth households in wealth transfer and estate planning. The company transforms complex estate planning documents into structured data assets that power tax and wealth transfer advisory workflows. With 1,000+ customers including multi-family offices, private banks, trust companies, and law firms, Luminary is backed by 8VC, Fin Capital, Rockefeller Capital, and Focus Financial Partners. In this role, you'll own the modeling engine that powers Luminary's core product: transfer tax computation, waterfall and distribution modeling, and the consolidation work that unifies calculations. The technical challenge is substantial—modeling trusts, estates, and complex ownership structures that rarely fit standard schemas, then computing against them using a comprehensive implementation of US transfer tax code (including strategies like GRATs, ILITs, QPRTs, and generation-skipping transfers). You'll work closely with the company's JDs and CPAs to validate calculations against real-world practitioner methods and state tax codes. Your data modeling decisions directly enable extraction workflows and agentic tools; you'll ensure the deterministic layer is correct and supports hypothetical modeling. You'll ship to production multiple times daily through CI/CD, using Go, Postgres, Temporal, and GraphQL on the backend, with observability via Honeycomb, Braintrust, and PostHog. The team is small and senior. You'll report to the Head of Engineering, work closely with the CEO (former Head of Wealth Management at AllianceBernstein) and Head of Product, and interact directly with customers to understand their pain points. The company supports both remote and in-office work; the NYC office is near Bryant Park. You should have 4+ years of software engineering experience at companies with strong practices. You prefer domain complexity (modeling intricate real-world systems) over infrastructure complexity, are rigorous about correctness and edge cases, and think product-first. Excellent communication is essential in a half-remote team.
