Salary: USD 130,000 - 150,000 / annual

The engineering team values clarity, collaboration, and ownership. You'll work on the systems powering Orchard's website and agent tools, focusing on helping customers explore homes, book consultations, and connect with agents. The role involves building and maintaining backend and frontend services that support both customer-facing and internal agent workflows.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build and maintain services and interfaces powering Orchard's website and internal tools (stack: Qwik frontend, Python/Postgres/OpenSearch backend, some React/TypeScript)
- Partner with product and design to scope and ship projects
- Debug and optimize core services for speed and reliability as the company prepares for national growth
- Ensure systems scale smoothly with growing user base
- Write clean, tested, maintainable code
- Improve developer workflows, testing, and documentation
- Participate in on-call rotations and own built systems
- Use AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Codex) as part of daily workflow—the role emphasizes effective AI tool direction and code review over manual coding
- Review code written by AI tools and catch errors
The team is small and moves quickly, offering real ownership and visibility. You'll report to a Senior Software Engineer and work from the NYC office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Requirements:
- At least 2+ years of experience as a software engineer
- Strong skills in at least one language relevant to the stack (Python, TypeScript, or Go), with solid knowledge of APIs and data modeling
- Experience with AWS, Postgres, SQL, Kafka, Airflow, Docker, or CircleCI is a plus
- Experience directing AI coding tools effectively
- Low-ego, problem-solving mindset with ownership mentality
- Interest in hands-on teams where engineers ship quickly with real impact
