Griffin is a fully regulated UK bank providing the banking backbone for product-led fintechs and platforms like Uber, Yonder, Prosper, and Sidekick. Founded in 2024, the company has grown rapidly to support products across remittance, payroll, wealth, insurance, proptech, payments, and neobanking. Griffin is now expanding into card issuing, stablecoin infrastructure, and agentic finance.
You'll join the Craft function, which operates as seven small cross-functional engineering teams. Each team owns a product area end-to-end, with engineers, an engineering manager, and a product manager working closely with designers. The team explores multiple solutions before committing, writing RFCs, building proof-of-concepts, and running experiments to validate approaches. The culture prioritizes maintainability over cleverness, observability over hoping systems work, and scalability over premature optimization. Quality code ships before arbitrary deadlines.
Current focus areas include building card issuing from scratch, going direct on Faster Payments, enabling cross-border payments, and building term deposit accounts. Day-to-day work involves writing reconciliation systems processing millions of FPS transactions, implementing double-entry accounting for card spending and settlements, designing webhook infrastructure with message signing and replay protection, building API versioning that evolves without breaking customers, and creating payment approval workflows satisfying both UX and compliance.
Success means impact beyond your own code: improving how the team works, making other engineers more productive, and building systems customers actually want to use. Examples include redesigning transaction reconciliation to handle 10x throughput, fixing webhook delivery failures, building tooling that cuts build times in half, writing RFCs that become team patterns, pairing to help engineers reason through complex systems, or owning features from RFC through live production.
You'll own technical decisions on projects, write RFCs, choose architecture, and decide when to extend versus rebuild systems. You'll deliver from customer problem to live feature, working with PMs to shape what gets built. You'll set technical direction through code reviews and architectural choices, and take production responsibility for systems you build.
Ideal candidates have either strong functional programming experience (production Clojure, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Scala, or Scheme) or fintech domain expertise in payments, accounts, ledgers, or compliance. You'll need strong software fundamentals and distributed systems knowledge—understanding consistency models, idempotency, and real production failure modes. Experience in product-focused collaborative teams and comfort with startup pace and ambiguity are essential.
