Ethos is a life insurance technology company transforming how life insurance is bought, sold, and underwritten. The company operates a three-sided platform serving consumers, agents, and carriers, offering instant life insurance products with no medical exams required.
As a Software Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain complex fullstack systems that power Ethos's platform. You'll work across the entire stack—frontend, backend, and APIs—collaborating closely with other engineers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders to develop and ship features.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building scalable platform services and systems
- Developing and maintaining APIs with strong performance characteristics
- Identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks
- Participating in code reviews and communicating best practices
- Writing engineering requirements documents
- Contributing to architectural decisions and internal standards
You should have 2-5 years of software engineering experience with strong fullstack capabilities in JavaScript, TypeScript, Node, or Python. You'll need solid frontend skills (HTML, CSS, React) and backend architectural knowledge for high-scale systems. Experience with A/B testing platforms, feature flags, Core Web Vitals optimization, and third-party communication infrastructure (Iterable, Twilio, Salesforce) is valued. You should understand security fundamentals, distributed systems, and modern deployment practices. Proficiency with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to enhance productivity is a plus.
This is a hybrid role requiring at least 2 days in-office and 3 days remote weekly. Preference for San Francisco location or willingness to relocate.
