Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonized energy system, controlling vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries at scale. The company moves gigawatt-hours of electrons in real-world electricity markets while operating at startup speed, backed by leading investors including Energize Capital and Accel.
As a Software Engineer, you'll build core infrastructure for connecting to distributed energy devices, orchestrating them, and enabling participation in electricity markets. This is a generalist role spanning product engineering, DevOps, and data engineering. You'll form deep understanding of the energy domain and business context, allowing you to execute independently at speed. The role emphasizes outcomes over process, with significant ownership of end-to-end products shipped to customers.
You'll spend time talking directly with clients, gathering user feedback, and collaborating with market operators. The company operates a deliberately flat structure with fewer layers, faster decisions, and more autonomy for everyone. You'll manage your own time and adapt to changing scope and deadlines, focusing on delivering 80% of value in 20% of the time.
The tech stack includes Python and React for frontend, Docker for deployment, GCP for cloud infrastructure, and aggressive use of AI tools like Claude Code. You'll work in a hybrid setup with a dog-friendly office near Farringdon, spending 2-3 days per week in-office to maximize collaboration.
Compensation includes a meaningful equity slice alongside competitive base salary (£75k–£200k total), enhanced parental leave, bi-annual team retreats, and the opportunity to directly shape the future of energy markets and accelerate the low-carbon transition. The company actively seeks diverse candidates and encourages applications from those who don't fit traditional stereotypes.
