The Astral team at OpenAI builds high-performance developer tools powering the Python ecosystem, including Ruff, uv, and ty—projects with hundreds of millions of monthly installs. You'll design and implement features in these open-source projects, serve as a maintainer triaging issues and reviewing pull requests, and evolve the toolchain to accelerate development velocity at OpenAI. You'll also build entirely new tools across different programming ecosystems to power agentic software development.
You should have 5+ years of professional engineering experience in relevant roles, with deep expertise in Rust, Python, open source, compilers, or developer tools (though few candidates excel in all areas). Strong systems engineering fundamentals, high agency in fast-moving environments, and exceptional ownership of security and reliability are essential. You'll need strong developer empathy, excellent communication skills, and a track record of leading complex projects from ambiguous problem statements to user impact. Proficiency in system programming languages like Rust is required or strongly preferred.
