As a Software Engineer on the Applied AI team, you'll build and operate systems at the intersection of frontier AI research and data delivery. This is a high-ownership, deeply technical role requiring end-to-end project ownership from requirements gathering through production deployment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partnering with frontier AI labs to understand their data, post-training, and evaluation needs
- Building and operating scalable data pipelines for post-training workflows and model evaluations
- Designing systems for synthetic data generation and data quality assurance
- Prototyping new data types, benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks
- Leading technical discussions with customers to develop solutions
You'll work in a fast-moving, high-ownership environment where you balance deep technical execution with customer interaction. The role blends backend engineering with research exposure, requiring you to work through ill-defined problems, prototype quickly with researchers, and take systems from early experiments to reliable production.
Required qualifications include strong backend engineering fundamentals in modern languages (Python, Go, Rust), experience with model training and inference, statistical analysis and experimental design expertise, familiarity with LLM evaluation methods, and comfort working through ambiguity while shipping iteratively.
The ideal candidate enjoys ownership and customer-facing problem solving, thinks entrepreneurially, balances speed with engineering rigor, and communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You'll work in-person five days a week at Mercor's New York office at One World Trade Center, with direct exposure to cutting-edge AI research and visible impact on frontier model development.
