OpenAI's API Enterprise Controls team is seeking an exceptional backend software engineer to help scale the platform capabilities that enable developers, startups, and enterprises to adopt the OpenAI API securely and confidently. You will own backend product capabilities end-to-end across authentication and identity, service accounts and key management, secure networking, compliance, observability, and operational workflows. This is a product-engineering role grounded in deep backend systems work, where you'll design and ship systems that developers and teams running critical applications depend on. Key responsibilities include: - Owning backend product capabilities spanning authentication, identity, service accounts, key controls, secure networking, compliance, observability, and operational workflows - Partnering with Product, go-to-market, security, infrastructure teams, and sophisticated customers to identify needs, shape roadmap, and lead large cross-functional projects from design through launch - Designing developer-facing APIs, system behavior, configuration, error handling, safe defaults, auditing, and notifications with exceptional attention to detail - Building, operating, and debugging highly reliable backend systems spanning databases, streaming infrastructure, request routing, and distributed services You bring 9+ years of professional backend, platform, or product-driven engineering experience. You have exceptional backend engineering depth paired with strong product judgment and a proven track record shipping API or platform capabilities users depend on. You've led large cross-functional initiatives, influenced product direction, and aligned engineering, Product, go-to-market, security, and infrastructure partners. You're proficient in backend languages such as Python, Go, Rust, TypeScript, or similar, with strong software design and systems fundamentals. You have experience with distributed systems, databases, streaming systems, request routing, authentication and identity, networking, or enterprise platform controls. You communicate clearly, demonstrate strong developer empathy, and excel at working with product partners and users to translate ambiguous needs into clear technical decisions. You hold strong opinions about reliability, DevOps, and operational excellence, with meticulous attention to details that make complex systems feel simple and dependable.
