Salary: USD 160,650 - 217,350 / annual
Mapbox is the leading real-time location platform serving over 4 million registered developers. The Search Geocoding team is responsible for building the best location-based search engine that empowers customers to find places and points of interest quickly and efficiently.
In this role, you will work on the core search engine including Conflation, Query Understanding, document retrieval, and ranking algorithms. You'll collaborate closely with Search Data, Search Evaluation, and Search API teams to deliver best-in-class solutions for customers worldwide.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and implementing search retrieval algorithms across multiple search engines
- Optimizing existing algorithms for efficiency and performance
- Writing technical design documents and participating in design and code reviews
- Owning the efficiency and accuracy of your designs through the full development lifecycle
- Collaborating cross-functionally with engineers, PMs, and international teams
- Supporting production systems with on-call duties and operational excellence
The team uses a modern development process with continuous analysis, experimentation, and optimization to provide the best user experience. You'll work in a hybrid environment with flexibility to work from home or periodically from an office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong understanding of search techniques (information retrieval) and data structures
- Practical experience making algorithms perform efficiently in production
- Ability to write sophisticated, highly performant, and reliable solutions
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a scientific, experimental approach
- Experience with modern programming languages (JavaScript, Python, Rust, Java, TypeScript, C++, Go)
- Proficiency with cloud services (preferably AWS) for monitoring, diagnostics, and continuous improvement
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with maps, routing, or navigation systems
- NLP, ML, or Generative AI experience
- Familiarity with search engines (ElasticSearch, Solr, Lucene)
- Experience solving challenging search problems at scale
- Big data, data mining, or data science background
