Salary: USD 119,070 - 150,000 / annual
Onbe, a fast-growing fintech payments company, is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer with deep expertise in AI-assisted coding to lead the modernization of legacy Java systems into cloud-native microservices.
You will design, develop, and operate production-grade Java microservices using Java 21+ and Spring Boot 3, partnering with internal SMEs and external vendors to decompose a legacy monolith into independently deployable, domain-oriented services. A core responsibility is becoming a long-term owner of the resulting domain services, driving their architecture, reliability, and evolution after the vendor engagement concludes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and build secure RESTful APIs using Spring Boot and API-first design practices
- Implement event-driven integrations using Azure Service Bus or comparable messaging platforms
- Design data access layers using JPA/Hibernate, JDBC, and relational databases (Azure SQL, SQL Server)
- Build comprehensive automated tests (unit, integration, contract, regression, end-to-end) following TDD and shift-left quality practices
- Use AI coding agents (particularly Claude Code) as a primary development method to generate, refactor, test, document, and troubleshoot code while critically reviewing and owning all output
- Containerize and deploy services using Docker, Kubernetes, and Azure Kubernetes Service
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, observability, and production support
- Monitor application performance and participate in incident response
- Collaborate across product, architecture, platform, security, QA, and business teams
Required qualifications: 5+ years of professional software engineering with substantial hands-on Java experience; strong proficiency with Java 21+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, and REST APIs; demonstrated hands-on experience with AI-assisted engineering tools and coding agents (Claude Code specifically); experience modernizing monolithic applications to microservices; relational database and SQL expertise; automated testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito); Docker and Kubernetes experience; cloud platform experience (Azure preferred); CI/CD and deployment automation; ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, security, maintainability, and performance; strong communication and end-to-end ownership skills.
Preferred: Agile development experience; background in payments, fintech, banking, insurance, or regulated industries; familiarity with payment processing, ledgers, settlement, ACH, cards, KYC, fraud controls, PCI, and sensitive-data protection.
