Oyster is a global employment platform that helps companies hire, pay, and care for talent across 60+ countries. This role focuses on identifying and building automation solutions that streamline complex payroll and operations workflows.
You will own defined automation projects end-to-end: understanding the problem, designing and building solutions, launching them, monitoring performance, and iterating based on results. The work involves mapping payroll processes, identifying repetitive manual tasks, and translating complex policies into reliable automated workflows.
Key responsibilities include:
- Mapping payroll processes from end-to-end, understanding how information flows between systems, where validation happens, and how country-specific rules affect operations
- Identifying high-impact automation opportunities by assessing frequency, risk, implementation effort, and cross-country applicability
- Improving underlying processes, not just automating existing tasks
- Translating payroll and operations expertise into documented, version-controlled logic and rules
- Building and maintaining automations using tools like n8n, Alteryx, and LLM-based solutions
- Integrating service platforms, payroll systems, databases, APIs, and internal tools
- Choosing the right approach for each problem: rule-based logic, workflow automation, AI, or human review
- Building reliability into workflows with audit trails, error handling, alerts, and appropriate controls
- Testing automations against real payroll scenarios and exceptions before launch
- Tracking performance post-launch and troubleshooting issues
- Partnering with Product, Engineering, and Data teams on platform-level solutions
- Handling sensitive payroll and personal information responsibly
You'll work in a fully remote, distributed environment across 60+ countries. Oyster is a B Corp-certified global employment platform ranked #10 on TIME and Statista's 2026 list of America's Top WorkTech Companies.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3+ years of relevant experience in operations automation, process improvement, business/process analysis, payroll operations, internal tooling, or similar
- Hands-on experience building and deploying automations using tools such as n8n, Alteryx, Make, Zapier, Power Automate, or similar
- Practical experience using LLMs to solve problems; ability to recognize when rule-based solutions are better
- Comfortable working with APIs, webhooks, and system integrations
- SQL and data analysis skills; ability to investigate, combine, validate, and analyze information from multiple sources
- Ability to structure messy processes into clear rules and data requirements
- Strong attention to accuracy, especially regarding controls and discrepancies that could affect payroll
- Clear communication skills; comfortable explaining technical concepts to non-technical colleagues
- Ownership mindset: can move from problem identification through implementation, testing, launch, monitoring, and maintenance
NICE-TO-HAVE:
- Multi-country payroll, Employer of Record (EOR), finance operations, or HR operations experience
- Knowledge of payroll concepts (gross-to-net calculations, payroll cut-offs, statutory deductions, taxable benefits, reconciliation)
- Experience building payroll or financial data validation/reconciliation tools
- Familiarity with Zendesk or other customer service platforms
- Hands-on experience with n8n or Alteryx specifically
- Prompt design, AI agents, or RAG workflow experience
- JavaScript or Python for data transformations
- Experience measuring operational improvements (first-time accuracy, processing time, service-level performance, error rates)
