Pinecone is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to join its Experience team, which owns the API, client libraries, authentication, revenue, and observability systems for Pinecone Nexus, a leading vector database powering AI applications for 9,000+ customers and 800,000 developers.
This is a wide-scope, high-autonomy role focused on redesigning Pinecone's developer experience for a world where AI agents are first-class users alongside humans. You'll work end-to-end across backend architecture, API design, SDKs, CLI, and web interfaces. Key responsibilities include:
- Pioneering agent experience by designing interfaces, protocols (MCP), and tooling that make Pinecone the easiest platform for agentic workflows
- Shipping end-to-end experiences across the full stack (HTTP layer to UI)
- Building systems that multiply team output through AI-powered workflows, automated quality gates, and high-leverage platform capabilities
- Setting standards for AI-assisted development on the team using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot
- Collaborating with product, design, and engineering to identify user and agent needs
- Building observable, auditable systems with monitoring, alerting, and verification mechanisms
You should have at least 4 years of software engineering experience with a proven bias toward automation and leverage. Required skills include hands-on experience shipping with AI coding tools, designing and delivering versioned APIs/SDKs/client libraries, building web interfaces with React, and proficiency with major cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure). Strong intuition for APIs that work well for both humans and agents is essential.
Bonus experience includes building or consuming MCP servers, familiarity with agentic frameworks and agent-to-agent communication patterns, proficiency in compiled languages (Rust, Go, Java), large-scale open-source contributions, and database/query engine SDK development.
