Zanskar is revolutionizing geothermal energy exploration using advanced software and machine learning to make geothermal a cheap and scalable contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid. The company is seeking a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to design and maintain the next-generation multi-physics well-targeting engine that powers their scientific research teams. You will lead the development and scaling of a distributed compute system that processes complex geophysical data at unprecedented scale. The role requires both technical depth and collaborative leadership—you'll work alongside geophysicists, geoscientists, seismologists, and engineers to solve hard problems in subsurface modeling and resource discovery. Key responsibilities include architecting fault-tolerant, event-driven systems; designing persistent data storage solutions for large-scale digital artifacts; ensuring system observability through logging, monitoring, and alerting; and mentoring other engineers in distributed systems design while learning domain expertise from domain scientists. Required qualifications: 7+ years software engineering in business environments (ideally with scientific computing); proven experience designing and implementing distributed computing systems; expertise with cloud orchestration (Kubernetes, serverless, custom VM fleets); experience with RDBMS and cloud blob storage at scale; fluency in Python and SQL; and familiarity with CI/CD, containerization (Docker), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Pulumi), and cloud platforms (GCP/AWS). Plus factors include experience with experiment tracking, optimization methods, applied algorithms, reinforcement learning, web development, and geoscience domain knowledge. The position is hybrid based in Salt Lake City, Utah, reporting to the Head of Reservoir R&D. Full-time, salaried role with comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision, 401k, stock options, 15 days PTO plus accrual, and paid holidays.
