Salary: USD 90,000 - 140,000 / annual
Icarus is building solar-powered aircraft that operate at 60,000 feet for weeks at a time, establishing persistent presence in the stratosphere. As a Senior Test Engineer, you will own the design, execution, and continuous improvement of test setups and procedures for aircraft hardware including avionics, power systems, sensors, and electromechanical assemblies.
Your responsibilities include: building and running test setups at bench and system levels; performing incoming inspection and bring-up of PCBAs and COTS components; executing environmental and qualification testing (thermal, vibration, altitude/vacuum) to validate hardware survival in stratospheric conditions; developing hardware-in-the-loop and automated test setups to accelerate engineering iteration; maintaining test equipment calibration and reliability; capturing and analyzing test data; documenting results and driving corrective actions; reviewing schematics, layouts, BOMs, and drawings; and supporting integration, production bring-up, and field flight testing.
You will work directly with the CEO and a small team of world-class builders in a high-trust, engineering-first culture that prioritizes execution over process. The role demands extreme ownership, fast learning, field troubleshooting, and the ability to push hardware to its limits. You must thrive under pressure, move quickly, and be obsessed with quality and speed—including willingness to travel to Mojave for early-morning flight tests.
Required: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, aerospace, mechanical engineering, or similar technical field; 2+ years of professional or project-based experience testing real hardware (electronics, electromechanical systems); ability to read schematics, layouts, and BOMs; hands-on experience with multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and component-level troubleshooting; familiarity with PCBA/electronics testing and environmental/qualification testing. You should be comfortable with rapid iteration, own outcomes end-to-end, and thrive in a no-nonsense, builder-focused environment.
