Gatik AI is the leader in autonomous middle-mile logistics, operating Level 4 autonomous trucks for B2B supply chain delivery. The company has deployed commercial autonomous vehicles across Texas, Arkansas, and Ontario, Canada, serving Fortune 500 retailers including Walmart. As Senior Systems & Safety Engineer for Drive-by-Wire, you will own the safety design and functional safety integration of the critical execution boundary where software decisions meet physical vehicle dynamics. This includes steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, throttle, shift-by-wire, and auxiliary chassis actuation systems on Gatik's autonomous trucks. Key responsibilities include: • Define functional safety architecture for redundant steering, braking, and propulsion control systems, ensuring ASIL D safety guarantees and fail-operational motion control. • Collaborate with commercial vehicle OEMs and Tier-1 drive-by-wire suppliers to evaluate interfaces, safety manuals, and ISO 26262 functional safety compliance. • Establish actuation fault management strategies, including fallback transition times, emergency stop execution, dynamic authority limits, and minimum risk maneuvers (MRM). • Perform detailed hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and fault tree analysis (FTA) on physical actuation channels and interface protocols. • Author top-level vehicle safety requirements for motion control interfaces and trace them through drive-by-wire controller firmware, CAN signals, and safety monitors. • Partner with testing teams to design and execute physical fault-injection campaigns on test tracks to validate actuation fallbacks under high-speed and heavy-payload conditions. Minimum qualifications: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or Automotive Engineering. 6+ years in vehicle chassis systems, drive-by-wire integration, or functional safety engineering. Strong knowledge of ISO 26262, SOTIF, and automotive safety standards. Experience with CAN bus, vehicle control systems, and OEM collaboration required. This is a full-time, onsite role (5 days/week) based in Santa Clara, CA.
