Gatik AI is the leader in autonomous middle-mile logistics, operating Level 4 fully driverless commercial trucks on fixed B2B routes for Fortune 500 retailers. The company has deployed autonomous Class 3-7 vehicles across Texas, Arkansas, and Ontario, Canada, and launched the world's first fully driverless commercial transportation service with Walmart in 2021. As Senior Systems & Safety Engineer for AI/ML, you will bridge cutting-edge deep learning algorithms (perception, prediction, planning) with rigorous safety engineering for autonomous commercial vehicles. You will define functional safety and SOTIF (Safety of the Intended Functionality) strategies for learned components, establish out-of-distribution detection criteria, design runtime AI safety monitors, and construct evidence-backed safety cases for machine learning models operating at Level 4 autonomy. Key responsibilities include: • Lead implementation of ISO 21448 (SOTIF) and UL 4600 frameworks across AI/ML pipelines • Derive safety requirements and performance boundaries for neural networks (false positive/negative limits, edge-case coverage metrics) • Design deterministic AI safety guardrails, OOD detectors, and runtime monitoring with fail-safe fallback mechanisms • Establish criteria for training/validation dataset completeness, operational design domain coverage, class imbalance, and synthetic vs. real data fidelity • Conduct HAZOP, STPA, and SOTIF risk analyses targeting deep learning failure modes (adversarial examples, sensor degradation, weather/lighting edge cases) • Author structured safety case arguments (GSN/Goal Structuring Notation) demonstrating acceptable residual risk for AI components in driverless operations The role is onsite 5 days per week at the Santa Clara, CA office. This is a technical individual contributor role requiring deep expertise in safety-critical AI systems for autonomous vehicles.
