As a Senior Systems Engineer on Cloudflare's One Appliance team, you will design and build the Linux-based edge appliance runtime and distributed control plane that connect customer sites to Cloudflare's global network. The appliance runs as physical hardware, virtual instances, and in public cloud environments, enabling customers to operate hundreds or thousands of branch sites without building their own platform.
This is a hands-on, product-minded role requiring movement between low-level systems work, distributed services architecture, and API design, with technical leadership responsibilities for major initiatives. You will help build systems that are secure, observable, resilient during partial failures, and safe to operate across large fleets carrying customer-critical traffic.
Key responsibilities include: designing and implementing end-to-end capabilities spanning cloud control plane, Linux appliance runtime, telemetry, and deployment environments; developing the Linux networking platform using IPsec, MASQUE, eBPF, and kernel networking primitives; building distributed control-plane systems that safely deliver configuration, tolerate intermittent connectivity, and support zero-touch fleet operations; improving hardware-backed identity, attestation, secure boot, and staged over-the-air upgrades; designing telemetry and diagnostics that make operability a product feature; driving customer-centered product decisions by working with customers, Product, Support, and Solutions Engineering; owning production outcomes from prototyping through rollout and incident follow-up; and providing architectural direction and mentorship across teams.
Required: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating complex production systems; strong software engineering fundamentals; deep Linux kernel and systems programming knowledge; experience with distributed systems, networking protocols, and fleet management; and demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives and mentor engineers.
