Salary: USD 120,000 - 180,000 / annual

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, Tumblr, and WooCommerce, is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join its infrastructure team. You will be responsible for delivering high availability, performance, and security across tens of billions of monthly page views and over a billion web surfers, supported by 30 private data centers across 6 continents. As part of a small, vertically integrated team managing massive infrastructure, you will participate in all aspects of infrastructure management, including: • Maximizing availability and uptime through proactive planning, sound architectural decisions, automation, and rapid failure response • Optimizing Automattic services for speed through server-side and client-side optimization and third-party service integration • Ensuring security and safety through proactive monitoring, real-time response, and maintaining data integrity and disaster recovery capabilities • Reducing friction between developers and shipping software by providing rapid answers and support You should have deep experience maintaining large Nginx setups with advanced routing, load balancing, and high availability; running very large MySQL/MariaDB deployments at scale; running and debugging PHP applications at scale; understanding the relationship between these services and lower-level system stacks (filesystems, network, memory management, kernel internals); and deep operational experience with large, complex public-facing web hosting systems. You can autonomously architect, prototype, and maintain solutions to different problems and hosting requirements, possess extreme attention to detail, and strive for operational excellence. The role requires availability for 2-3 weeks of in-person team meetings annually. Automattic is a fully remote company with an open vacation policy and competitive benefits.
