Metropolis Technologies is building the Recognition Economy—AI systems that transform physical-world interactions into seamless, personalized experiences. The company pioneered parking automation and is expanding into retail and hospitality through computer vision and real-time decisioning.
As Senior Staff Software Engineer for the Recognition Platform, you will be the technical owner and architect of Metropolis's core platform—the edge-to-cloud system that ingests sensor signals, resolves identity, makes real-time decisions, and triggers actions across millions of touchpoints. You are the engineer other engineers escalate architectural questions to, holding the entire platform in your head and navigating boundaries across application, computer vision, data, security, and platform teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading end-to-end architecture across edge ingestion, identity resolution, decisioning, notifications, and operator surfaces
- Driving cross-functional alignment and resolving ownership ambiguities across multiple engineering disciplines and external partners
- Evolving high-volume edge-to-cloud streaming pipelines engineered for tail latency, intermittent connectivity, backpressure, and out-of-order events
- Designing rules and decisioning layers for real-time actions: watchlist alerting, arrival routing, eligibility, consent gating, frequency capping, and next-best-action logic
- Balancing deterministic logic with probabilistic signals through explicit thresholds and quantitative error reasoning
- Architecting privacy, identity, and consent models for biometric-regulated environments with bounded-time opt-out propagation
- Owning production quality through SLOs, alerting, runbooks, soak testing, and progressive rollout
- Elevating technical standards through design reviews, code reviews, mentorship, and AI-native engineering workflows
Required: 15+ years building and operating distributed, data-intensive production systems with deep platform ownership experience. Expert proficiency in JVM languages (Java/Scala), event-driven and service-oriented design (gRPC/protobuf), streaming, and relational data modeling. Hands-on experience designing high-throughput ingestion pipelines with deep understanding of delivery semantics, idempotency, ordering, and backpressure. Experience building rules, eligibility, or decisioning systems where deterministic logic coexists with probabilistic signals. Strong systems judgment, excellent written technical communication, and comfort with physical-world deployment constraints. Deep understanding of observability, automated testing, progressive delivery, and fluency with AI-assisted tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot).
Plus factors: computer vision or biometric matching experience, privacy/biometric regulatory background (BIPA, CCPA, GDPR), IoT/edge computing, identity resolution, hospitality/retail software, or prior principal-adjacent scope.
Stack: Scala (primary), Java, TypeScript, React, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, AWS, GitHub, Datadog, Copilot, Claude Code.
