Coinbase is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer to own the technical strategy and architecture for Identity & Access Management (IAM) across the Platform organization. This is a high-impact, company-wide role that unifies human, AI agent, service, and workload identity into a coherent platform serving 700+ internal systems. You will own the multi-year technical strategy for IAM end-to-end, including architecture that consolidates workforce, AI agent, and service/workload identity under a common model with shared primitives for authentication, authorization, provisioning, and governance. You'll drive architecture decisions across multiple pods and teams you don't directly manage, establishing standards, review bars, and integration contracts that hundreds of engineering teams build against. Key responsibilities include building the adoption strategy for 700+ systems (sequencing, migration paths, build-vs-buy decisions), partnering with Security, Compliance, IT, Infrastructure, and product leadership to translate audit and regulatory requirements (UAR, SOX, SOC 2) into automated controls, and leading the data model and tooling that answer "who has access to what, and why" across a heterogeneous infrastructure. You'll also mentor staff and senior engineers, raising organizational depth in identity as a domain. Required: 12+ years of software engineering with a track record as the most senior technical leader on a platform spanning multiple teams. Deep IAM expertise across multiple domains (workforce identity, authorization, access lifecycle, non-human identity) with substantive experience in service or workload identity at scale. Production Go experience and distributed systems design on AWS, fluency in identity protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, workload identity patterns). Proven influence without authority at senior levels, ability to translate regulatory requirements into automated technical controls, and clear communication for executive audiences. Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person "surge" sessions. The role offers competitive compensation, equity, bonus eligibility, and comprehensive benefits.
