Zscaler is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer specializing in C, networking, and dataplane architecture to join the Engineering Team in San Jose (hybrid, 3 days/week in office). This role reports to the Senior Director of Software Development Engineering.
You will design and implement high-performance data path features for load balancing and Layer 7 protocol handling, directly enhancing the scalability and security of Zscaler's global networking infrastructure. Working with deep C programming expertise and autonomous ownership, you will drive complex architectural projects from conception through large-scale deployment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and implement datapath features for load balancers, firewall rules, and L7 protocol implementations
- Apply expert knowledge of C programming, data structures, and algorithms to build high-performance systems
- Independently drive moderately complex projects from conception to deployment with full ownership
- Leverage deep expertise in networking protocols (DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, SSL/TLS) and services
- Optimize networking and security applications using Unix/Linux operating systems knowledge

Minimum qualifications:
- 8+ years building large-scale commercial networking and security applications
- Proficiency in C or C++
- Strong foundational knowledge of data structures and algorithms
- Working experience with Linux, Unix, or similar operating systems
- BS or MS in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or equivalent
- Demonstrated curiosity and active exploration of AI tools with proven integration into workflows
Preferred qualifications:
- Exposure to AI-assisted software development tools and workflows
- Advanced knowledge of DNS, HTTP, TCP/IP, and SSL/TLS protocols
