Salary: USD 182,400 - 314,400 / annual

Carbon is seeking a Senior Staff Firmware Engineer to lead the firmware engineering team and architect firmware development for advanced 3D printing and hardware systems. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on firmware engineering, requiring expertise in embedded systems, real-time control, and cross-functional collaboration. Key responsibilities include leading the firmware engineering team and representing firmware priorities in cross-functional design discussions with Electrical, Mechanical, Software, and Systems Engineering teams. You will write drivers and state machines for custom PCBs, build firmware within mechanical design constraints, integrate firmware into software update pipelines, develop firmware build systems, and debug firmware-to-software communication. The role also involves writing firmware for smart hardware devices, including sensor integration, signal processing, motor control, and feedback control system design. Technical work centers on developing and maintaining real-time C/C++ firmware on TI/ARM platforms using TI-RTOS, building unit, board, and regression tests in C++ and Python using test-driven development, and defining firmware development best practices. You will mentor junior engineers and support electrical and systems engineers working in firmware domains. Required qualifications include a BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field, with 7+ years of firmware engineering experience. Deep expertise in C, C++, and Python is essential, along with strong understanding of analog and digital circuits and ability to read electrical schematics. Experience with TI microcontrollers, communication interfaces (USB, I2C, SPI, UART, custom serial protocols), version control (Git), and circuit/system-level debugging using multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers is required. Demonstrated technical leadership or mentorship experience within an engineering team is mandatory. Preferred qualifications include experience with Altium Designer, Field Oriented Control (FOC) of PMSM motors, in-circuit testing of PCBAs, board-level troubleshooting, Protobuf and nanopb, and bootloader/OTA update tools development. The position is hybrid with 4-5 days expected in office in Sunnyvale, California, with flexible working from home allowed during different project phases.
