Salary: USD 182,500 - 220,000 / annual
Archer is an aerospace company building all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for sustainable air mobility. As a Senior Staff Backend Engineer on the Platform Core team, you will architect and build the foundational services that power the entire platform—including the Entity Registry, change tracking, typed source system connectors, and integration infrastructure that all application teams depend on.
You will own the design and implementation of Go backend services, PostgreSQL performance optimization, and durable infrastructure that application teams consume through the Platform SDK. This is a high-impact role focused on building the backbone of a complex, distributed system.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build core backend services in Go, handling scalable systems with diverse inter-process communication patterns (blackboard, direct, queues, etc.)
- Build common data models from heterogeneous data sources and implement entity CRUD, search, and traversal capabilities
- Design and optimize PostgreSQL schemas for performance, scalability, and evolution; implement indexing strategies and query optimization
- Define and implement strongly typed, reusable APIs using gRPC/protobuf or REST/OpenAPI
- Implement change tracking and event propagation patterns (e.g., outbox pattern) for reliable data consistency
- Build middleware for authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and audit logging
- Contribute to observability, reliability standards, and CI/CD infrastructure
- Collaborate with platform and application teams to validate services in production
- Support AI-assisted workflows by exposing clean, structured APIs suitable for controlled automation
Required: 10+ years backend engineering experience, strong Go proficiency, deep PostgreSQL expertise (schema design, performance tuning, indexing, query analysis), distributed systems experience, typed service contract definition, cloud infrastructure (AWS or equivalent), reliability patterns (idempotency, retries, consistency), and API/SDK development.
Preferred: Enterprise API integration experience (OData, REST, SCIM), JSONB modeling, gRPC/protobuf, change data capture (CDC), policy-as-code authorization (Cerbos, OPA), Kubernetes/EKS, Terraform, and experience building services for LLM/AI workflows.
