Radar is the global leader in geolocation infrastructure, processing over 1 billion API calls per day. The company provides geofencing SDKs, maps APIs, and AI-enabled solutions for marketing, fraud, and operations teams, trusted by Fortune 500 companies and high-growth startups alike.
In this Senior Backend Engineer role focused on Maps, you will own the data foundation behind Radar's geocoding platform, operating at massive scale (15,000 requests/second). Your responsibilities span the entire geocoding stack from data ingestion to serving, with deep ownership of how location data is modeled, kept consistent, and served reliably.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the data layer architecture that powers geocoding, working across Scala, Python, and Rust
- Building and maintaining data pipelines that integrate commercial and open data sources, expanding coverage and quality globally
- Incorporating LLMs and AI agents into the data layer for enrichment, labeling, and quality assurance with appropriate guardrails
- Ranging across the geocoding stack as needed, from HorizonDB (Radar's geospatial database written in Rust) to the Node.js/TypeScript API layer
- Engaging directly with customers and prospects to understand feedback and ensure their success
The technical stack includes HorizonDB (Rust-based geospatial database), Tantivy/RocksDB/FSTs for indexing, ML models for query understanding, Scala/Python data pipelines on Airflow, Node.js/TypeScript API layer, MongoDB, S3/Athena, Redis, and AWS/Kubernetes/EKS infrastructure. Most engineers participate in on-call rotation.
Radar values generalist engineers who are curious, customer-focused, and comfortable jumping between different technical domains. The company has raised $85.5M from top-tier investors (Accel, Insight Partners), recently moved to a new Flatiron office in Manhattan, and was named a top 10 best place to work in NYC by Crain's. The engineering culture emphasizes shipping fast, talking to customers, and delivering significant work weekly.
