ONI is seeking a Senior Software Test Engineer to join their Oxford-based team developing advanced microscopy platforms (Aplo Scope and Nanoimager) for scientific discovery and cellular research. The role combines QA leadership with DevOps responsibilities, focusing on embedded software testing across hardware/firmware/software boundaries.
Key responsibilities include designing and executing manual test plans for embedded devices, performing functional, regression, integration, and system-level testing, and leading release testing activities. You will identify and document defects, collaborate with firmware and software engineers to reproduce and root-cause issues, and contribute to test automation efforts using tools like Playwright. The role involves setting up and managing test environments, lab hardware, and test rigs, while also helping build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
You will mentor junior QA engineers, champion testing best practices across the team, and work closely with product managers to design test cases representative of real use cases. The position requires continuous improvement of QA processes to enhance product quality and team productivity.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, minimum 5 years as a Software Test/QA Engineer, hands-on experience testing embedded software or firmware, and working knowledge of DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD pipelines, Git, Docker, Jenkins/GitLab CI). You should have experience with containerization technologies like Docker, excellent troubleshooting skills, strong communication abilities, and experience working in Agile/SCRUM environments.
Desired qualifications include life sciences industry experience, Playwright or web/UI test automation frameworks, ISTQB certification, Kubernetes or container orchestration experience, cloud platform experience (GCP preferred), Infrastructure as Code tools, performance/load/security testing knowledge, and experience with monitoring and observability platforms.
