Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. With ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, Speechify is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead Windows desktop application development.
In this role, you will own the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ as needed. You'll define and enforce best practices across the Windows codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability.
A key focus area is accessibility: you'll integrate and validate support for Windows accessibility APIs (Microsoft UI Automation), ensure proper keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, focus management, and usability for users with disabilities—aligning with Speechify's mission to remove barriers to learning.
You'll collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and stakeholders to shape feature planning and the long-term Windows platform roadmap. You'll take full ownership of the feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance. You'll also diagnose and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing robust architectural solutions.
Required qualifications: 3+ years of Windows desktop application development with Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, and XAML (plus ideally native Windows code experience). Deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interop between managed and native code. Proven track record shipping production-quality desktop applications emphasizing reliability, performance, and maintainability. Strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs and commitment to inclusive software. Excellent software engineering fundamentals (OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading). Experience leading technical design, mentoring engineers, code reviews, and architecture decisions. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. User-centric mindset.
Bonus: UI test automation experience, performance optimization expertise, localization/globalization experience, familiarity with telemetry and crash reporting, CI/CD and release pipeline experience, demonstrated ownership of feature areas long-term.
