Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio. With ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, Speechify is building accessible reading technology.
You will lead the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ as needed. Key responsibilities include:
• Define and enforce best practices for Windows desktop development: code architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability.
• Drive accessibility efforts by integrating and validating support for Windows accessibility APIs (Microsoft UI Automation), ensuring proper UI controls, focus management, keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, and usability for users with disabilities.
• Collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, QA, and stakeholders to shape feature planning, UI/UX architecture, and the long-term Windows platform roadmap.
• Own the full feature lifecycle: conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance, ensuring quality and consistency across releases.
• Identify, diagnose, and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems with robust architectural solutions.
• Lead technical design, mentor other engineers, conduct code reviews, and make architecture-level decisions.
Required qualifications: 3+ years of Windows desktop application development with Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, and XAML; deep understanding of Windows application architecture and interop between managed (.NET) and native code; proven track record shipping production-quality desktop applications; strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs; excellent software engineering fundamentals (OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading); experience leading technical design and mentoring; strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; user-centric mindset.
Preferred: automated UI testing experience, performance optimization expertise, localization/globalization experience, familiarity with telemetry and crash reporting, CI/CD and release pipeline experience, demonstrated ownership of feature areas long-term.
