Speechify is a text-to-speech platform used by over 50 million people to convert PDFs, books, Google Docs, articles, and websites into audio. The company was named Chrome Extension of the Year by Google and received Apple's 2025 Design Award for Inclusivity. With ~200 employees globally in a fully distributed setting, Speechify is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to lead Windows desktop application development. In this role, you will own the design, architecture, and development of native Windows desktop applications using Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, XAML, and C++ as needed. You'll define best practices for Windows development across the codebase, covering architecture, performance, memory usage, responsive UI, cross-version compatibility (Windows 10/11+), and maintainability. Key responsibilities include driving accessibility efforts by integrating and validating Windows accessibility APIs (Microsoft UI Automation), ensuring proper focus management, keyboard navigation, and screen-reader support. You'll collaborate with product designers, UX researchers, and QA to shape feature planning and the long-term Windows platform roadmap. You'll own the full feature lifecycle from conception through design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance, ensuring quality and consistency across releases. You'll also identify and resolve complex bugs, performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, rendering issues, and compatibility problems, proposing robust architectural solutions. Required qualifications include 3+ years of Windows desktop application development with Windows App SDK, WinUI, C#, and XAML, plus ideally native Windows code experience (C++, Win32/WinRT/COM). You need deep understanding of Windows application architecture, including interop between managed and native code. You should have a proven track record shipping production-quality desktop applications emphasizing reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability. Strong experience with Windows accessibility APIs and dedication to inclusive software is essential. You'll need excellent software engineering fundamentals (OOP, design patterns, data structures, algorithms, memory management, multi-threading), experience leading technical design and mentoring engineers, and strong communication skills. Preferred experience includes automated UI testing, performance optimization for desktop apps, localization/globalization, telemetry and crash reporting, CI/CD workflows for desktop applications, and demonstrated ownership of feature areas long-term.
